BeatScope on iPhone: a pocket analyzer and DJ utilities

The BeatScope team · updated July 14, 2026 · ~4 min read

In short: on iPhone, BeatScope is not a stripped-down desktop — it's a pocket kit for working live. Live tempo, key and energy analysis from the mic, plus five utilities: the Camelot wheel, a haptic metronome, a tuner, an SPL meter and a recorder. All offline.

You don't always want a laptop at the booth. Often it's just your phone in your hand — and that's exactly what we built the mobile version for. It's not about "browsing your library on the phone", it's about live tasks in the room.

Live analyzer — it hears the room through the mic

Point your iPhone's mic at the speakers and BeatScope shows BPM, key (in Camelot and notes) and energy in real time, straight from the air — no file import. Under the hood it's the same engine as on Mac: an onset envelope and autocorrelation for tempo, a chromagram and Krumhansl–Schmuckler profiles for key. Full method write-up: "How BeatScope Detects Key and Tempo".

The Camelot wheel in your pocket

Tap a key and the compatible ones light up. Neighbour key around the wheel, major/minor swap A↔B, an energy boost of +7 — transitions come together without clashing. It's the same wheel as on Mac.

Metronome with haptics

Precise tempo with tactile feedback: the phone taps on the beat, so holding a groove is easier when you rehearse or learn a transition. The range is adjustable.

Chromatic tuner

Not just for guitarists: guitar and piano profiles, an adjustable A4 reference, and precise deviation in cents.

SPL meter

Sound level in dB: peak hold, an averaged Leq and a calibration offset for your specific mic. It opens in landscape and has a StandBy-timer mode — handy to leave the phone on the booth.

Recorder

Record a set or a musical idea from the mic right in the app, including in landscape. Nothing extra — open and record.

Offline and private

All analysis and utilities run on-device without internet. In a club with no connection, that's not a nicety — it's a requirement. And your audio never leaves the phone.

Summary

Mobile BeatScope is live mic analysis plus five utilities you actually need at the booth. Not a desktop replacement — its pocket-sized continuation.
